Winter has arrived in full force this year. There has already been a lot of
heavy wind and rain in the Skyline area causing several downed trees and
with them power lines and road closures. If you encounter a situation
involving downed power lines, driving on the roadway or on your property,
there are special safety conditions you should consider. First,
report the condition via 911 if it is on the roadway, or could be a hazard
to others, or is a fire threat. Report directly to PG&E if the downed wire
is solely on your property, there is no fire threat, and not a hazard to
others. Do not touch any down wires! Wires may be energized or re-energized
without warning. Also surfaces that are in contact with the wires will also
conduct electricity. For example wire fencing, gates, wet road way, wet
wood, pipes, etc. Do not drive over a downed wire. It may become
re-energized but also it can become an entanglement hazard by snagging on a
part of the vehicle. It is better to be safe and not take the risk.
I would also like to thank the members of the South Skyline Association for
your continued support and recent donations. Our South Skyline Fire and
Rescue group was able to purchase two new fire hose nozzles to add to our
equipment. These are multi-functional/flow variable type nozzles and cost a
bit over $700.00 each.
As always we are looking for new members. If you are interested or would
like more information please contact myself or anyone of our group. After
the events of September 11, it was especially gratifying to receive a
friendly wave from several strangers on Hwy 9 as I returned to the station
in the fire engine and to be associated with the "fire family".
