South Skyline Association
911 Emergency Response Information
In the South Skyline area our mailing addresses, street addresses, and
phone prefixes do not always uniquely identify the physical location of our
homes. To verify that emergency services will know how to find you when you
call 911 from your home, follow these instructions. Since South Skyline
includes portions of three counties and three area codes, check specific
information for the county in which you are located.
- Post the County assigned address so it is visible from the roadway. This
is the address associated with the tax assessor's parcel number. This is the
most important and valuable action you can take to help the emergency responders
find your location.
- Notify your phone provider of the County assigned address you want used for
911 purposes. This can be different from your billing address. You may also
have the phone company add up to 20 characters of additional information to
your 911 address display that may assist in locating your property.
- Notify the office for your county (shown below) of your name, address, phone
number and any additional information that will help fire, law enforcement and
medical units find your property. The County geographical file can accept more
detailed information than the phone company file can. You may include responsible
person information, gate codes, etc. You may do this by mail, fax or e-mail.
Additional information per county and for cell phone users:

Since both Pacific Bell and Verizon (GTE) serve this area of Santa Cruz
County, it is important to make sure that 911 calls go to the correct
county. To make a test, first call the communications center at 831-471-1170 and ask for a 911 test. Then when you call 911 to test, it will
be recognized and not treated as an actual emergency. If your call goes to
the wrong county, the dispatcher will complete a "misroute" form submission to
the appropriate telephone company.

Calls from cell phones to 911 go to a California Highway Patrol (CHP)
dispatch center. With the proliferation of cell phones, the system is
seriously overloaded. These calls can be put on hold for lengthy periods of
time. Calls to 911 from stationary phones go to a separate system. One
solution is to use the cell phone to call someone you know to be home or at
work, and have that person place the 911 call from a land line.
