Alternative Plan to the Partridge Farm
Development Plan

Home | Alternative Plan | Castle Rock

This is the text of an alternative proposal as it was presented to Dave Vincent, State Parks District Superintendent, on March 25, 1998. The District Superintendent declined to support the alternative plan, but did agree to pass it on to Sacramento.

GOALS: TO PROVIDE A PLAN THAT WILL PRIORITIZE THE PRESERVATION, PROTECTION, AND RESTORATION OF THE PARK, GENERATE MAXIMUM REVENUE, WHILE PROVIDING FOR A QUALITY VISITOR EXPERIENCE, TODAY AND TOMORROW.

  1. KEEP USAGE AT NO MORE THAN CURRENT LEVELS No net increase in parking.
  2. CONTROL ALL PARKING: Maintain the existing lot: 50-60 cars. Close Highways 9 and 35 to all parking except in designated areas determined to be consistent with the ecological health of the park and the region, and State Park's ability to provide adequate staffing.
    CHARGE PARKING FEE.
    POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL PARKING LOCATIONS:
    HIGHWAY 35:
    Summit Rock
    Mt Bielawski at Smeads
    At Highway Marker 10.7
    HIGHWAY 9
    Sempervirens Point
    Red Mountain
    Others
  3. RESTORE PARTRIDGE FARM. This rare ridgetop terrain probably provides unique wildlife habitat, including the largest Black Oak forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Restoration could be an active teaching experience, soliciting help from local schools, using Tin Can Ranch as a base of operations, or passive, as we let the recovery that has already began, to continue unmolested.

THIS ALTERNATIVE PLAN IS DESERVING OF SERIOUS CONSIDERATION BY THE PLANNING TEAM, THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION, AND THE PUBLIC. WE URGE THAT IT BE INCLUDED, AS AN ALTERNATIVE PLAN, IN THE TEXT OF THE GENERAL PLAN.

INCLUSION OF THIS ALTERNATIVE IN THE GENERAL PLAN HAS THE SUPPORT OF:
the Sierra Club, Loma Prieta chapter
the Sierra Club, Ventana chapter
Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society Society
Wildlands Project
Others
